Pardon me for the foul language and the scattered thoughts, but I’m penning this down in a state of tremendous disquiet. I think you too would be, if you were to listen to the below-mentioned war of words (the 'battle-field' is Twitter) between savages, which I chanced upon, on this very afternoon. Remember that the following incident is only a fragment of the vast labyrinth of dark passages blinding this bleak world. I think I would rather see the glass half-empty than half-full with filth, hatred and blood --
Piyush Kulshreshtha [@thinkerspad] -- “Teesta justifying Godhra...Bitch.”
Vasim [@vasimdlxdent] -- “It was justifying to kill 5000 people in contrast with 59? BHAI sahab we have faced a horrifying days post Godhra. The Gujarat government is hiding the original numbers. We had rehabilitation camp at my place by grace of god we made them stable with a roof.”
Piyush Kulshreshtha [@thinkerspad] -- “Complete nonsense. The amount of persecution a superb leader like Narendra Modi is facing, all facts have been exaggerated.”
Vasim [@vasimdlxdent] -- “That is your school of thought. Not mine. I am not Mr.Modi at all....but it was his responsibility of to control the Post-Godhra riots.”
Piyush Kulshreshtha [@thinkerspad] -- “Kyun Bhaisahab? Didn't Muslims burn the 59 Hindus as part of a pre-meditated plan? After an act of terrorism or violence is done by Muslims, the community simply DISOWNS them and goes to sound sleep.”
Vasim [@vasimdlxdent] -- “You can't target a religion directly. Now, we can end conversation here....so what are your thoughts on Malegaon, Modasa and Samjhauta express....who are they?”
Piyush Kulshreshtha [@thinkerspad] -- “What have you accepted as the member of the community where this extremist, nation-breaking mentality is bred? Nothing. Lol...I know, asking Muslims to reform socially, is an act of extremism on part of a Hindu...”
Vasim [@vasimdlxdent] -- “Cheap thinking of cheap people...it was conspiracy done by some cowards in the name of religion to ruin the prosperity of Muslims...what about Sadhvi. Aseemanand. Premanand . Purohit ????”
Piyush Kulshreshtha [@thinkerspad] -- “Sikhs are nothing in front of Muslims...Muslims know how to make a scene, play victim, hit a person with his own shoe and get innocent punished.”
Vasim [@vasimdlxdent] -- “All comments are anti Muslim...baby grow up. I condemn your thoughts on Muslims. You are a bloody extremist who has no religion.”
Piyush Kulshreshtha [@thinkerspad] -- “Muslims are worldwide indulging in terrorism and you are warning me? Have they left any country in peace?”
Vasim [@vasimdlxdent] -- “Islam is the fastest growing religion the world everybody knows what NATO Americans do. Islam is my religion and I am proud of it. I was born Muslim and will die Muslim.”
Piyush Kulshreshtha [@thinkerspad] -- “There comes out the Terrorist and Fundamentalist inside you. Playing the Victim that you are not. You guys will keep on blaming everyone instead of pushing for reforms in your social set-up. You'll never change.”
Ayoub Bhat [@ayoubsrinagar] -- "By comparing train fire with Gujrat riots you have indeed proven your Indian view of secularism."
Piyush Kulshreshtha [@thinkerspad] -- "In any case Pakistanis have no business talking about our Indian affairs. So fuck off from my timeline."
Ayoub Bhat [@ayoubsrinagar] -- "I was expecting this but I am not Pakistani. I am a Kashmiri finding holes in you and your system."
Piyush Kulshreshtha [@thinkerspad] -- "
STFU you Paki..."
I think GOD is great. Without ever existing, he manages to wreak so much havoc and script so many gory tales. Fancy that! Omnipotent, indeed! I remember remarking thus some while back in one of those inconsequential write-ups -
"The atheist rails at religion with a fervour that is somewhat annoying. Despite my conviction in the non-existence of an almighty force, I still wouldn't dismiss religion and indict it on the grounds of encouraging evil. The devil can always find excuses for mischief. If you take the dagger out of his hand, he will procure a pistol. At least that the knife can more or less serve better purposes. The whole notion of an inscrutable providence is at best, a poetic expression of man's optimism. Confounded by the unreason of his existence, the imaginative but faint-hearted man conceived God to even out the chasm of absurdity. That sums it up. Every believer is a poet of sorts."
Well, that's past. I'm not that much of an idealistic optimist these days. The ripe fruit is soft and sweet. Time flies. The fruit hardens up, turns sour, starts rotting and eventually disintegrates. Sad Story.
There is this poignant song from Kamal Haasan's Anbe Sivam (Love Is God) [click], which invokes emotions and instigates a catharsis everytime I listen to it. It runs like this --
Who is god? You and me are gods…
Life is a penance… Love is god…
The Devout believer says, "God is love"…
While the rational altruist says, "Love is the only god"…
Love is god… Love is god always…
Love is god… Love is god everywhere…
Love is god… Love is god always…
Love is god… Love is god everywhere…
Who is god? You and me are gods…
Life is a penance… Love is god…
If heart is nothing but flesh, fire will devour it some day…
But if heart is the object/made of love, then it conquers death…
Love is god… Love is god always…
Love is god… Love is god everywhere…
Love is god… Love is god always…
Love is god… Love is god everywhere…
Who is god? You and me are gods…
The ones who follow the path of love, they are immortal...
The triumph of love and compassion, those moments define a lifetime...
Love is god… Love is god always…
Love is god… Love is god everywhere…
Love is god… Love is god always…
Love is god… Love is god everywhere…
And this post is incomplete without mentioning this beautiful scene from the very same movie. Because years ago, it marked the awakening of a 15-year-old boy to the world around him...
The Bottomline -- Waving a clenched fist, I want to yell out loud at the 'fanatic believers', "THERE IS NO FUCKING GOD ABOVE YOUR HEAD!!" And with folded hands, I want to tell the 'poetic believers', "LOVE IS GOD."
8 Mushrooms Sprouted:
I remember you at least once everyday. I don't want a person as beautiful as yourself to have to think about this vile World, that it is. This World doesn't deserve you.
I'd typed a very long message from my tab, which I lost. I'm sorry to let my sloth deprive you of it.
You're one of the select few people who I'd like to be part of my World.
On the topic I'd only say it's not 'God', but the groupism it breeds that's the problem. Most of the World problems are cuz of power struggles - people (in group or as individuals) trying to prove their power over others (to fill in the void of purposelessness of living, which you'd so eloquently described).
Otherwise, there's lot for humans to enjoy in this World & be happy about, including each other.
I wish you'd find someone you could love with complete understanding of what that person would be, and who'd love you likewise, so that they could shield you from this vile World. But I've been somehow afraid since long you won't allow yourself to fall in love thus (forget about the person loving you back). But let me not get more emotional than you might've been while writing this post. :)
The reason I don't indicate of my having thought about you is cuz for lazy people like me it's easier to think than to write. :)
Take care.
Well, if you meant to be sarcastic, I understand. However, in the name of God ..people kill and people justify.
You have a lovely blog! That is a great scene from the Anbe Sivam:-)One of the finest films ever made..
When I feel down because of bigotry or any of the various forms of xenophobia and chauvinism exhibited by our species,I watch this video
http://thechive.com/2012/02/15/you-are-here-a-beautiful-speech-by-carl-sagan-video/
and then I am hopeful again
Personally I have mixed feelings towards organised religion - I admit it does good things - encourages people to be moral, becomes an excuse for charity (I studied in a school built for just such a reason), becomes an outlet of philosophy, inspires creativity (look at the majestic Sistine Chapel or the Golden Temple or the Blue Mosque), provides comfort for those who cannot deal with a world without meaning, gives hope through prayer and most importantly, helps mourn the loss of the dead as I have seen in our hospital.
But then, aren't all these things desirable and achievable in man even without religion? Ethics and morality can exist independently, so can virtue and altruism.
All considered, I think I am a humanist if I subscribe to any 'ism' that would be mine. I have faith in the goodness and ability and intelligence of the human species.
I don't think we need the opiate of the masses to lull us into peace or numb the pain of war.
I think people blame gods rather unnecessarily. Even without religion, I'm sure we're perfectly capable of hating our neighbours and instigating fights. We'll find reasons aplenty. Religion's just one that's the easiest card to play. Holy war sounds so much more righteous than "I want to steal all that land for myself and my kin!" and of course, everyone likes to keep up appearances.
After all, God created us in his image and in return we created God in ours.
This's a big big issue!!I don't think it can be written all of a sudden in 'georgia' font.So why do we call ourselves 'secular'-if we can't ever be like that...Let me state an incident.
Once I happened to visit one of my friend's house. My friend's younger sister just came back from school then. She without even changing her uniform went directly in front of TV and her mother scolded her.And her words were like'Do go and wash your body. Its now polluted sitting with those * and* people(she mentioned the names of two religions)and I was shocked,to hear these words from a so called 'sophisticated','educated' lady!,if this's the poison she injects daily, can we complain if that kid becomes an extremist one day!!
I have a friend who thinks exactly like me..We always plan to change this society in our own way,Lets go and marry a man from other religion...!And then we find solution ourselves,my father is a communist..he will surely agree...
Who knows?!Utopian Ideas!!
But then when I saw my sister's wedding proposals dashing just because my father belongs to a different 'sub-caste'...I wonder, where we are heading to??!
So nice of u Rohith 2 bring up this extremely relevant issue as a post in your popular blog!Let people atleast think of secularism..
Between,I was totally shocked when Rohith's blog having this title!!:)
@ Ketan,
That was most overwhelming, mate. But I'm not quite sure if I'm as good as you consider me to be. You said it is easier for 'lazy people like you to think than to write'. Well, the case is that slothful wretches like me find it easier to 'pen down thoughts', purge emotions and run away from reality than to 'act'. The real gems are those who don't hesitate to act and spare no effort in making this world a better place. Trust me, there is no halo over the head! ;)
And let me echo you, "You're one of the select few people who I'd like to be part of my World." Take Care. :)
@ Aativas,
Point. But doesn't it point to a moral weakness? Do we have a conscience so crippled that we need a prosthesis called 'God'?
@Arumugam,
Thanks a million for that link, mate. It's so beautiful! I think the BGM is a Ludovico Einaudi piece. Just intensifies the poignance of the speech...thanks again for the enriching experience. :)
@KK,
I concur. "The devil can always find excuses for mischief." Not necessarily blaming any nonexistent entity but the wretched brutes called humans. We've been giving the devil a run for his money since time immemorial. World would be a much better place the day conscience and rationality go hand in hand. As you said, "Ethics and morality can exist independently, so can virtue and altruism." As mentioned above, our conscience doesn't need any prosthesis.
@Neethu,
First things first. I'm not sure if secularism/inter-religious marriages are anywhere near the real solution to the problems mentioned above. But I may be wrong [I am, more often than not]. But it's good to know that young ladies like you are showing that wisdom and verve to make this world a better place. As I always say, keep kindling that fire of goodness, Neethu. As for the title....well, one must thank the mindless b******s out there for instigating one to such extremeties..
Take Care. :)
"Thad Thvam Asi"... :)
